IUCAA is an autonomous institution of University Grant Commission. Under Public Outreach Programme, it organises lectures on various topics related to science, space, astronomy etc. on second Saturday of every month. The main objective of these kind of lecture programmes is to popularize science among the school students.
As a part of this programme, a lecture by Prof.Somak Ray Chaudhari, Director of IUCAA was organised on 13th August, 2016. 10 students from std X were selected for attending this lecture. Students reported at 9.30 am at Chandrashekar Auditorium of IUCAA. The lecture started at 10 am. The topic for the lecture was ‘Our Place in Space’. Prof.Somak Ray Chaudhari explained about place of our planet in the galaxy among thousands of galaxies in the universe.The science dealing with the same is now referred as ‘cosmography’.
He also explained the contribution of various scientists, expansion of universe, the gravity and motion of galaxies. He explained types of supernovas and the method of naming them. He explained various phenomenon in space with the help of interesting power point presentation.
He answered the queries of student. The lecture was useful for students as it helped to develop interest for space science among the students. The students were served with snacks after the lecture and the programme concluded.
